Tommy Mays, having been a sideman with some of the biggest names in R&B, Jazz and Blues, has finally stepped out on his own. This emergence signals a new and dynamic chapter in the Atlanta music scene.
Hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, Tommy has been living in Atlanta since 1978. While in college, he was a member of the symphonic orchestra (contra bass clarinet) and the jazz ensemble (sax and flute). He also found the time to gig with some of Jacksonviles' top local funk and jazz bands. His desire to gain more exposure, along with the declining local music scene was the determining factor in his decision to relocate. Philadelphia or Atlanta? Both cities had a thriving and versitile musical community. A tough decision, but Atlanta won out! Some of his earlier musical influences were Michael Brecker, Hank Crawford, John Klemmer, Wilton Felder, Sonny Rollins, Hubert Laws, and Grover Washington Jr. Sitting in with local jazz bands, he quickly found his talents on flute and tenor in great demand on the recording and touring circuit. He has showcased these talents in the US and abroad, performing with and sharing the stage with such notables as The Temptations, Millie Jackson, The O'Jays, BB King, Michael Henderson, Nina Simone, Archie Bell and the Drells, Issac Hayes, Joe Simon, Bobby Blue Bland, Peaches and Herb, Johnny Taylor, The Brothers Johnson, The Isley Brothers, Adlan Cruz, Howard Hewitt, The Dells, Miles Jaye, Reynaldo Rey, The Whispers, The Stylistics, and too many more to name in a career that has spanned over 30 years.
He has played in festivals throughout Europe, from the North Sea Jazz Festival (The Netherlands), The Pori Jazz Festival(Finland), and the Montreux Jazz Festival (Switzerland). Tommy has also entertained in nightclubs and auditoriums in London, Manchester, Berlin, Frankfurt, San Remo (Italy), Vienna (Austria), Tokyo, Osaka, the Bahamas, not to mention the Apollo Theatre, Carnegie Hall, and venues in practically every major city in the U.S. In April 2010, he had the honor of being featured along with his trio on the television program 'Atlanta Jazz And Blues.
Tommy is now available as a solo artist or with band (duo, trio) for parties, weddings, receptions, or whatever your business or social event requires. He is also currently a member of the pop/rock band 'Twisted Hip'.
